EJ Obiena Philippines’ First-Ever 12th Asian Indoor Gold, Athletics Championships

Ernest John “EJ” Obiena, the Philippines’ world-class pole vaulter, has etched his name in history by capturing the gold medal at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in Tianjin, China. Ranked No. 11 globally, Obiena’s triumph marks the nation’s best-ever performance at the prestigious indoor event, solidifying his status as Asia’s top pole vaulter.

Ernest John “EJ” Obiena, the Philippines’ world-class pole vaulter ranked No. 11 globally, has just made history by winning gold at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships. This victory marks the country’s strongest performance ever at this indoor track and field event.

The 12th edition of the championships took place in Tianjin, China, and Obiena dominated the men’s pole vault competition on Saturday. In a field of five athletes, he cleared 5.70 meters on his very first attempt—meaning he soared over the bar smoothly without any misses at that height. That jump was enough to secure the top spot and the gold medal.

For comparison, China’s hometown favorite Li Chenyang took silver after clearing 5.60 meters. Another Chinese athlete, Chen Yang, earned bronze with a 5.40-meter clearance. Obiena’s performance was flawless and confident, proving once again why he’s Asia’s top pole vaulter and a two-time Olympian.

“This means way more than just a win for me!!!” Obiena posted excitedly afterward. “Your boy is finally an Asian Indoor Champ.”

This gold is extra special because it’s Obiena’s first Asian indoor title. It completes his set of major continental championships—he already had outdoor Asian golds, but this indoor one had been missing until now. The Philippines’ previous best at this event was a bronze medal in 2024 in Tehran, Iran (won by hurdler John Cabang), so Obiena’s triumph lifts the national showing to a whole new level.

The win comes hot on the heels of another gold for Obiena earlier this year. Just last month (January 29), he topped the International Springer-Meeting in Germany. Right after his Asian success, he flew back to Europe to compete at the INIT Indoor Meeting Karlsruhe in Germany—where he cleared 5.70 meters again and finished with a strong bronze medal behind top vaulters from Norway and the USA.

Obiena, who trains and lives in Formia, Italy, is now laser-focused on the next big goal: qualifying for the World Athletics Indoor Championships set for March 20–22 in Kujawy Pomorze (Toruń area), Poland. To get an automatic spot, he’s targeting a clearance of 5.90 meters in the coming weeks. His Asian indoor record stands at an impressive 5.93 meters (set in 2024), so he’s got the talent and momentum to hit that mark.

Pole vaulting is one of the most thrilling events in athletics: athletes use a flexible pole to launch themselves over a high bar, combining speed, strength, technique, and nerves of steel. At 5.70 meters, Obiena is jumping higher than most houses—about the height of a two-story building!

For Filipino sports fans, this is a moment of huge pride. Obiena continues to put the Philippines on the global athletics map, showing that with dedication and skill, a Pinoy athlete can compete and win against the world’s best—even indoors, far from home.

Congratulations to EJ Obiena on this golden achievement. The Philippines is soaring high!
